Go4IT Programme – Limerick Institute of Technology Awards Certificates to Fifty Local School Children

Limerick Instituture of technology awards 2014Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) hosted a celebration of community and voluntary engagement in the LIT Millennium Theatre on Thursday, 22 May. Fifty primary and secondary school students who participated in the Go4IT programme were presented with Limerick Institute of Technology Awards Certificates of participation by the president of LIT Dr Maria Hinfelaar.

Go4IT is a collaborative initiative with the Northside Family Resource Centre and aims to support young people from Limerick’s Northside RAPID area who have academic potential but are from backgrounds where there is little or no tradition of progressing to third-level education. As part of focusing on third-level education, the programme also aims to introduce the concept of lifelong learning and show that education has a real purpose.

Speaking at the ceremony president of LIT Dr Maria Hinfelaar said, “Through the Go4IT project LIT brings young people from Limerick’s Northside RAPID areas into the Moylish campus to participate in activities and workshops. By participating in a range of programmes and meeting LIT students, young people from our community get to see first-hand the excitement of learning at third level and hopefully when the time comes, choose to continue their studies beyond second level.”

The keynote speaker at the ceremony was Mike Fitzpatrick, Director of the Limerick City of Culture who commended the students on their participation in the programme and encouraged them to avail of all the events on offer over the summer as part of the programme for the City of Culture.

Anna Murphy, Access Project Officer, who leads the GO4IT programme said, “The success of this initiative is greatly enhanced by the involvement and active engagement of the partner schools and the Northside Family Resource Centre.”

LIT president, Dr Maria Hinfelaar, also awarded participants of GIVE, the Guided Initiative in Voluntary Engagement, with a President’s Commendation in recognition of their voluntary contributions both on campus and in the local community. The GIVE project encourages LIT students to engage in voluntary activities under the guidance of the LIT Access Service. This year, two LIT students, Mairead Keogh and Aileen O ‘Brien, were presented with awards acknowledging Excellence in Volunteerism.

Speaking at the ceremony Anna Murphy, Access Project Officer, said, “The spirit of volunteerism at LIT is about engagement, participation, and the contribution made by students who are active and care about their college and local community.”
